Welcome to our measuring section! It's easier than ever to measure for window blinds & shutters. Simply follow our easy step-by-step instructions and save heaps by ordering your window blinds & shutters online.

Before you begin...

You will need the following;

  • Measuring Tape

  • Pen & Paper

  • Step Ladder

Let's get started!

Now that you have the tools, let's get you started. It's a simple 3 step process;

Step 1: DECIDE

Window blinds & shutters can be mounted on inside the window frame (reveal or recess fit) or outside the window frame (face fit).

INSIDE FRAME [RECESS FIT]

Mount your window blinds & shutters inside the window frame  (Recess / Reveal Fit) for a clean & crisp look.

OUTSIDE FRAME [FACE FIT]

Mount your window blinds & shutters outside the window frame (Face Fit) for maximum light control.

Step 2: MEASURE

Now that you have decided your mount type, let's learn how to measure the width & drop for your selected mounting position.

MEASURING FOR INSIDE FRAME [RECESS FIT]

Measure the inside of your window frame for the width & drop.

  • Measure at 3 places for width & drop, use the smallest measurement.

  • Do not make any deductions, we will do that for you based on your blind type.

  • Measure in millimetres (mm), and use a metal tape measure.

MINIMUM RECESS DEPTH

(Applicable to Inside Frame install only)

When installing for Inside Frame (Recess/Reveal fit) check that your window depth is adequate to install your blind. Check the table to find the required recess depth for your selected window blind/shutter type.

Minimum Recess Depth Window Blinds

  • Roller Blinds: 50 mm

  • Roller Blinds (with cassette/pelmet): 80 mm

  • Roman Blinds: 80 mm

  • Double Roller Blinds: 80 mm

  • Triple Shade Roller Blinds: 80 mm

  • Zebra Blinds | Vision Blinds: 80 mm

  • Top Down Bottom Up Roman Blinds: 50 mm

  • Panel Glide Blinds: 80 mm

  • Timber Venetian Blinds: 75 mm

  • Hybrid Plantation Shutters: 67 mm

  • Timber Plantation Shutters: 67 mm

  • Poly PVC Plantation Shutters: 67 mm

  • Aluminium Plantation Shutters: 67 mm

MEASURING FOR OUTSIDE FRAME [FACE FIT]

Measure the outside of your window frame with desired overlap for the width & drop.

  • If you wish to mount on the architrave, measure the width from outer edge of left architrave to the outer edge of right architrave. Measure the drop from top of the architrave to where it is desirable for the blind to finish (generally to the bottom of the architrave).

  • If you wish have extra overlap, then measure the width and drop to cover the desired area. To reduce light leakage from blinds (not applicable to Plantation Shutters), we recommend around 50-60mm overlap on sides and 70-75mm on top of the blind. If your window has a protruding window sill or go down to the floor, we recommend to have 10-20mm clearance from floor, especially for Panel Glide Blinds.

Once you have measured the width & drop for your window blind have a look at some specific information that will assist you in ordering the best fitting window coverings.

PLANTATION SHUTTERS

When measuring for custom made Plantation Shutters, it's a good idea to consider the following in order to make the most out of your window coverings.

WINDOW SILL / FLOOR TOUCHING WINDOWS

For windows that go down to the floor or have a protruding window sill (Do not mistake a protruding sill to an architrave as the architrave protrudes same across all sides of the frame, window sill only protrudes at the bottom), select the appropriate option when ordering your Plantation Shutters online.

SQUARE FRAME (Inside Frame Install Only)

If you are considering to install plantation shutters inside the window frame (recess/reveal fit), please ensure that your window frame/recess is square. To do so, measure your window frame diagonally and check that the difference between measurements is 10mm or less.

MID RAIL HEIGHT

A mid rail in a plantation shutter panel is a fixed louvre positioned in between rotating louvres, if necessary and provides structural integrity to panels of your plantation shutters. If your Plantation Shutters require a mid-rail, you will be given an option to decide the position of mid-rail. To measure for your mid-rail, simply measure from the bottom of drop to the centre of mid-rail. If no mid-rail measurements are provided, we will default it to the centre of drop measurements. However, it is a good decision to align the mid-rail with any horizontal dividers/mullions on your window, to maximise light, view and aesthetic appeal.
